The quake reportedly rattled items off shelves in homes in some Chicago suburbs and awakened many people around 4 a.m. this morning, but caused no serious damage, according to a survey of local news reports. The epicenter was about a mile from Pingree Grove and four miles from Gliberts. Earthquakes are rare in the enormous region east of the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. The vast swath of America can go years without facing an earthquake large enough to be felt, according to the USGS. Several U.S. states have never reported a damaging earthquake. The earthquakes that do occur may strike anywhere at irregular intervals. -- Image: A blue square indicates the epicenter of this morning's earthquake west of Elgin, Illinois/USGS
